Google AI Overviews Are Taking Your Clicks. Here's How to Win Them Back

If your organic traffic has softened whilst your rankings held steady, you have probably met Google AI Overviews. These are the AI-written answers that now sit above the traditional results for many searches, and they change the deal: Google answers the question itself, cites a handful of sources, and a share of searchers never clicks through to any website at all. That is unnerving. It is not unwinnable. Here is what is actually happening to your clicks, and how to come out ahead of it.

What Google AI Overviews actually do to your clicks

An AI Overview is a generated summary that draws on pages from across the web and presents a direct answer at the top of the results page, with citation links to the sources it used. When the summary satisfies the searcher, the click that used to land on a website simply never happens. When it does not satisfy, the searcher scrolls on, and the familiar organic results still do their job.

The impact is uneven by design. Informational searches, the "how does this work" and "what is this" questions, are the most likely to be answered in place, because a paragraph can satisfy them completely. Searches with commercial intent behind them, comparing providers, checking prices, finding someone local to call, still overwhelmingly lead to clicks, because a summary cannot finish that job. Knowing which of your keywords sits in which camp tells you where your real exposure is, and it is usually smaller than the headlines suggest.

Zero-click searches are not new, but this is bigger

Zero-click searches predate AI. Featured snippets, knowledge panels and map packs have been answering questions on the results page for years, and site owners adapted. What Google AI Overviews change is coverage: a generated answer can address far more questions, in far more depth, than a snippet ever could. The trend that was nibbling at informational traffic now takes proper bites out of it.

The honest conclusion is that some raw traffic is not coming back. Pages that exist purely to answer a simple question will keep losing visits to answers given in place. Chasing that lost volume with more thin pages is effort spent on the shrinking part of search. The growth sits in the two things a generated answer cannot replace: being the cited source inside it, and owning the searches where a click still has to happen.

The clicks that survive are worth more

Here is the part the doom headlines skip. When searchers do click through from a results page that includes an AI answer, they arrive better informed and closer to a decision, because the casual, half-curious visits are the ones Google AI Overviews absorb. What remains of your organic traffic skews toward people actively comparing, evaluating and buying. Fewer visits, better visits is a real pattern, and it changes what you optimise for: conversion, proof and clarity on the pages that matter, rather than raw session counts.

Reframe the metric: the question is no longer just "how much traffic do we get". It is "how visible are we at the moment of decision". Increasingly, that moment happens inside the answer itself.

How to win visibility inside Google AI Overviews

The first response is to become a source the answer cites. A citation puts your name, and a link, inside the very feature that absorbed the click, in front of a searcher at their most attentive. The qualities that earn citations are specific and learnable: direct answers under question-shaped headings, structured data, genuine authority signals and original information. We cover the full playbook in our guide on how to rank in AI Overviews, and the broader discipline in our AI SEO explainer.

The second response is to rebalance your content toward the clicks that survive. Comparison pages, pricing guides, case studies, service pages and local landing pages all serve searchers a summary cannot satisfy. Strengthening them grows the traffic Google AI Overviews leave untouched, which happens to be the traffic most likely to become revenue.

Cursor choosing between an AI answer box and organic results

Measure it, then move

Before changing anything, look at your own data rather than the industry noise. In Search Console, find the queries where impressions held but clicks fell: that gap is the overview's shadow on your site. Separate informational keywords from commercial ones and judge each group on its own trend. Then check whether Google AI Overviews cite you, or your competitors, for the questions that matter in your market. Our free AI Visibility Checker shows you exactly that across the major AI engines.

Watch your analytics for referral visits from AI assistants as well. For most sites they are small numbers today, but they are the early trace of a channel still forming, and they behave like referred customers rather than cold visitors, because a recommendation is exactly what they received before they clicked.

The businesses that come out of this shift ahead will treat AI answers as a surface to be earned rather than a tax to be suffered. That is the thinking behind our AI and GEO visibility service: keep the organic traffic worth keeping, and put your brand inside the answers taking the rest. If GEO is new territory, our plain-English guide to what GEO is is the place to start.

Questions

AI Overviews and traffic, quick answers

Do Google AI Overviews reduce organic traffic? +

For some searches, yes. When the generated answer satisfies an informational query, the click that used to follow never happens, so pages built purely to answer simple questions tend to lose visits. Commercial and local searches still overwhelmingly lead to clicks. Check Search Console for queries where impressions held but clicks fell to see your own exposure rather than relying on headlines.

Can I block my site from appearing in AI Overviews? +

You can limit how your content appears using Google’s snippet controls, such as nosnippet and max-snippet, but that removes you from the answer without removing the answer itself. Searchers still see the AI summary, just one built from your competitors. For most businesses, being cited inside the answer beats being absent from it.

Is SEO still worth doing now AI Overviews exist? +

Yes. AI engines choose their cited sources using the same signals classic SEO builds: crawlable sites, authoritative content, clear structure. The work that ranks you in traditional results is also the work that earns citations, and the commercial searches that drive revenue still run through ordinary clicks to ordinary websites.
